Glacier National Park is located in the U.S. state of Montana, which borders the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. The park covers over one million acres (4000 km2) and includes parts of two mountain ranges , over 130 named lakes, more than 1000 different species of plants and hundreds of animal species. The area was Glacier National Park was first inhabited by Indians and by the arrival of European explorers, was dominated by the Blackfoot in the east and the Flathead in the western regions. Shortly after the establishment of the park 11 1910 May, a number of hotels and lodges built by the Great Northern Railway.
Glacier National Park, nearly all of its original endemic plant and animal species. Mammals such as grizzly and mountain goat as well as uncommon as the wolverine and lynx are known to inhabit the park. Hundreds of bird species, more than a dozen species of fish and even some reptiles and amphibians have been documented. In 1974 there was a wilderness study sent to Congress, which identified 95% of the total area of the park, that qualify for wilderness designation. Unlike some other parks have Glacier National Park yet to be protected as wilderness, but the National Park Service policy requires that the identified areas that are listed in the report are managed as wilderness to Congress makes a full decision. Ninety-three percent of Glacier National Park is managed as wilderness, even though it has not been officially designated.
Glacier is far from big cities and the nearest airport is in Kalispell, Montana, southwest of the park. Amtrak trains stop at East and West Glacier. A fleet of restored 1930 White Motor Company, coaches, called Red Jammers, offers tours to all major roads in the park. The drivers of the buses are called "jammers".
